Inspired by both the beautiful but potentially dangerous cloud formations and the tougher than nails tools used by blacksmiths since the beginnings of human history, the Tamrac Anvil carries all your photography gear to the grittiest and most beautiful places on earth. Anvil was designed from the ground up utilizing over ten different optimized foams for the perfect balance of weight and protection. Anvil packs are tough, but light thanks to the engineered materials. They feature a large main compartment designed to carry multiple pro-sized DSLR bodies with lenses attached along with a full range of lenses, flashes and accessories. A front padded pocket holds most 15 inch laptops and exterior pockets hold accessories. Carries a tripod with quick release straps. Comfortable airflow harness and removable Arc and M.O.L.L.E. compatible belt system makes any amount of gear easy to carry. The Anvil Slim packs are 4cm less deep to better accommodate DSLRs without battery grips and full featured mirrorless systems.

The Anvil Slim 15 was my choice after weeks of shopping price vs. quality. Sturdily built with attention to detail, flexible layout to accommodate various gear, and shoulder straps and waist belt for comfort packing it. Although this model is smaller than others in Tamrac's line, it will hold my 5D3 body, A7R3 with Metabones adapter and Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6L attached, two other lenses, a speedlite and various accessories. There's still room for a 15" laptop and snacks. Oh, I should mention that Tamrac is the only company to ever send me a tracking number within one hour of ordering. Thanks Tamrac for a superior product and outstanding service!
I have always liked Tamrac gear for their quality, so when I was in the market for a backpack camera bag they were where I checked out first. I also looked at some others , but the known quality got me coming back to Tamrac. I purchased the Anvil 27 and love it. It holds all my gear (which includes a large telephoto lens) and I still have a few spots for a few more extras.
She absolutely flipped when she opened her Tamrac Anvil 27 as her last Christmas present!
Anvil23 - First, let me say that I have waited to write this review, because it doesn’t make sense to me to write a review before living with it for a bit.
So, the bag is durable. It holds up to getting packed, unpacked, repacked, thrown in the car, in the tent, and laid out on various surfaces for access. It holds a TON of stuff. I love the aesthetic of the bag. It has pockets I need to store the little extras (although, I could use just a couple more little pouches).
However, it has one big drawback for me. Even though it’s a big bag. The straps are torture for me. If I want to wear the bag and shoot, I can expect to have painful, chafe marks on the front of my shoulder, just above my armpit. The straps are apparently too close together. If you re a bigger guy, I’m not sure if these bags will work. I also have no other solution, aside from maybe a sling bag. If the straps were narrower, or had more give, maybe.
Lightweight plus top quality. One of the reasons I selected the Anvil 15 over other brands was the design included so many additional zippered storage compartments inside and out of the pack. Every detail down to zipper pulls has been skillfully engineered. There is plenty of space for all my gear. Compartments are well padded with plenty of protection for lens, filters and camera as well. Don't have to remove the 70-200mm from camera body to transport. Since I don't pack extended distances, this works perfectly for short day trips and car excursions. Would highly recommend to my photography buddies.
Bought for my 4/3 gear and travel. Fits all my gear plus! Like the tripod attachment options. Still have space and pockets for MacBook Pro and accessories. Very well constructed
I am a photography enthusiast. I don't have just one main focus. I shoot photos of anything - from birds, to automotive, to weddings, and portraits. This bag is the only bag that has been able to keep up with me and ALL of my lenses! I am able to fit two DSLRs and all of my lenses - including my 150-600mm lens - in this bag. Great product! I am excited to use it more this summer!
I recently purchased this bag ahead of a big international trip that involved multiple airports. This bag was great to hold all my gear comfortably and wear through airports and while hiking, but the biggest benefit is that the camera storage compartment unzips to open completely and be flat. This allowed me to unzip that bag and keep all of my camera equipment inside through airport security screening, which is an enormous savings of time and sanity! I can't recommend this highly enough for those who are regularly taking camera equipment through airports!!
Solid very well built bag! I am able to carry everything I need safely and I love the loaded amount of internal and external pockets, as it keeps everything so organized.
Plenty of storage for all my gear...Z6, 610, and Fuji x100f...I’ll use other bags for other shoots, but I needed something to replace several other bags and consolidate into this one. Mission accomplished. Great construction, seems very durable. Pretty good so far.
Great Bag! You will be surprised at how much gear you can get in the bag. I also like the fact it has the look of a normal backpack rather then broadcast “ hey I’m a camera bag, come and steal me”. I came from a expedition 7x and I got everything in this bag I had in it.
The bag comes as advertised. It’s well made and easily configured in a variety of different configurations. I can fit 2 Nikon 500 bodies plus a 200-500 lenses fairly easy. Looking forward to seeing how it does on the road.
Replaced an Expedition 5 that was showing its 20+ years of use. This bag is great and has allowed me to pack an extra body and lens with room to spare. Excellent design with lots of space for all my gear, 2 bodies, 5 lens with hoods, flash with accessories, filters, batteries and more.
This bag is the prefect size for my small frame. It holds all my camera, numerous lenses, the essentials and more. I definitely recommend this bag for those just starting on their photography journey.
Recently traded in my Lowepro Protactic for the Anvil 27 and oboy was it a good choise. Best bag I have ever owned and Im a bit of a camerabag collector nowdays. 5 stars for sure. Get this bag, you won´t be dissapointed.
Our daughter was thrilled with her new backpack. So much room to carefully store all her cameras and accessories.
Very roomy and holds my new MeFotto travel tripod easily. I especially like to special back cushion which makes the backpack comfortable in long hikes
I have the Anvil 27. So far so good. Plenty of room. When I am in remote areas and have non-flat surfaces to work my bag from and bend that deforms the zipper makes it hard to zip in a hurry without reshuffling the lenses and cameras and trying to flatten the bag. The thicker, wider zippers on some older Tamrac bags were much better. That would have given this bag a 5.
I was looking for a backpack that was lightweight and the right size to carry the additional accessories I need for wildlife photography such as my large flash, my Better Beamer, my Wimberly flash bracket, tele-converters, spare batteries and memory cards, etc. I wanted one with an excellent and comfortable backpack harness that would allow me to carry my gear. I typically leave my primary camera with my large super telephoto lens mounted on my tripod balanced on my shoulder ready for any opportunity. In the Anvil 17 I have found the perfect such backpack with plenty of room for my gear with room to spare and a comfortable harness. The ARC components add additional flexibility for carrying a water bottle and small accessories at the ready. My only wish is that Tamrac would introduce a sling style camera strap that could be attached to the backpack harness for carrying a secondary camera body with a zoom lens at the ready. Black Rapid has the Backpack Breathe but it doesn't fit well to the Tamrac Anvil 17.
However I am so impressed by the Anvil 17 that now I am looking at the Anvil 23 or 27 as an upgrade to my current backpack for my landscape kit.
I purchased Anvil Super 25 at the recommendation of a friend. He has it & holds his DSLR camera, 600mm lens with the 1.4 teleconverter perfectly. The new design is slightly different than the previous design because now the backpack is tapered in more from the top of the case from the handle. The backpack has lost an inch or two & my camera, lens & teleconverter does not fit perfectly & the zipper does not completely close. But it does close enough to keep everything protected & I'm satisfied with the backpack. I suggest that Tamrac go back to the previous design and not taper the top, but leave it more boxy as before. This is the only backpack case I could find to fit my set up
After soo many years of running around with my old Expedition 5 and refusing to upgrade (couldn't find another bag that I liked), it finally died and I had to get a new one.
I contacted Tamrac for help, as I wanted almost the exact same bag, and they recommended the Anvil 11 to me. No regrets and I couldn't have asked for a better backpack! It comes *everywhere* with me and does a great job of keeping the weight off my back and I barely notice the weight on my back from my equipment now when I'm moving. It's also since taken a trip to Maine, Grand Teton National Park, gotten drenched in the rain, a waterfall (hooray for rain covers!) and does pretty well with balancing between and lodged into rocks to prevent movement (I.e. good balance). It's also come onto multiple construction sites, into a couple of power plants, an abandoned mill and into a foundry with me without issue. Makes my job a heck of a lot easier and can certainly handle the more extreme situations I'm in all the time for work! If you're hesitant- don't. It's a wonderful bag and keeps my equipment safe with room to spare.
I have recently switched from Canon 5D's to Sony - 2 x A9 and 1 x A7RII. The space is just so awesome for the new bread of smaller Pro cameras. I shoot and travel all over the world, in and out of places and constantly on the move. This pack holds three bodies, a 70-200 2.8 and other lenses and flash plus all accessories and in addition, I cam carry a 15" laptop and iPad Pro. It's an incredible product!
Five Stars hands down!!!!!
I recently bought the Anvil 17 to upgrade from my 9(!)-year-old Tamrac Adventure 75. I needed space for more kit and a laptop. Needless to say, the Adventure 75 is still almost intact, having endured snowy mountains, sandy beaches and extreme temperatures. I am looking forward to at least another 9 years with my new Tamrac backpack. I have high expectations, and I don't think I'll be disappointed.
When I was looking for a bag for my large lens I showed around the area camera stores for one and as I expected none of them hand any in stock. So it was web time. After looking ae different manufactures and checking out sizes I went with the Tamrac Anvil Slim 11. I have several of there bags that get some abuse and I got to say they are like new except for a little ware. So I got the Slim11 and it fit perfect with my Nikon bodies snd the 70/200 0r 200/500 lens. They make a great beg with room to spar for extras. I only wish that on the web site there would be photos oe the different page with equipment in them so you can get a idea of what they can do. Tarmac is a great product and you could not do better....
It's not one of the best ... it's the best camera bag ... thanks
Like many others, I too, have tried a number of different bags with a variety of configurations. This is the best bag I have found. The materials used in its construction are the best and the layout is well planned. This bag will last me for many, many years and protect my gear for all of those years. It is well worth the investment.
The companies ethics are the best part. My Tamrac bag's zipper to the computer compartment came unstitched. It didn't take long for an agent to respond to my email for repair. In the end they gave a full replacement all while attending to ALL of my emails and concerns of finding replacement than held a 17" computer and the gear my previous bag held. I received a comparable if not better replacement under warranty than I had before and loving my new ANVIL 27. Although it says holds a 15" computer, my MacBook pro 17" fits nicely along with my two DSLR's, multiple lenses and accessories. I can't say enough about the good customer service. I will not be buying from another company, Tamrac IS my bag of choice!! THANK YOU TAMRAC!
I spent a great deal of time examining camera backpacks from the various and sundry suppliers. I ended up purchasing units from Lowepro and Think Tank for evaluation. Unfortunately, I found them wanting in various ways. I stumbled across the Tamrac Anvil 15 and figured I had nothing to lose, so I ordered it and started the evaluation. From the beginning I felt that I had finally found the pack for me. It is spacious, has a lot of compartments to organize all of the various items that end up in a camera backpack.
Most importantly, the backpack fits all of my gear and I can still get it under most airline seats with little or no adjustment. As a frequent traveler, this is the most important feature.
I should have gotten the smaller one, be careful with sizing that you don't overdo and get one too large. It would benefit by having a bottle holder on either or both sides. Otherwise, the materials and craftsmanship are superb!
If there were a bottle holder on one side this would be perfect.
The Anvil Slim 15 is hands-down the best camera bag that I have had the pleasure to own. Tamrac offers many different sizes for most of their models, which adds to the ease of selection dependent upon what gear you will be hauling. The Anvil Slim 15 was the perfect choice for me. It is manageable enough for any means of transportation, with enough internal space to fit my 3 DSLR camera bodies, along with 3 lenses with plenty of extra space. The hip straps relieve strain on the back by diverting the weight to the upper hip, much like a backpacking pack. The build is extremely durable, and the all-weather cover is a nice touch. The laptop pocket easily fits my 15 inch laptop, and the two front pockets hold my hard drives perfectly. If you are on the fence about a gear bag, I assure you, look no further! You will not be disappointed.
The bag is roomy enough, and carries weight well enough, that I can travel to gigs via bike. Importantly, there are a ton of ways to strap stuff to the outside of the bag. And even more important, the laptop slot is on the outside of the bag, and not on the inside against my back. This makes it possible to lean forward (like when riding a bike) without risk of crushing or bending my laptop. Only downside is the zippers feel a little sticky/cheap. But that's so minor it's still worth five starts to me.
My adventure photography style demands my equipment to hold up in some pretty untoward conditions, and this bag is no exception. I have had it out in torrential rain, a lighting storm, thick Australian bush, an extremely dusty motorbike trip, scraping our way through some tight caves, and it has kept my equipment safe and dry every time. It is extremely comfortable, and I love the space so I can pack some mountain top clothes if I'm going light on with my camera equipment. All in all I think it is a great all rounder bag that will suit anyone!
I have been using the Anvil for about 4 months now and it has been an excellent, all-around day hike and travel camera bag. Ample room for all my lenses and accessories, great customization with the removable inner sections and plenty of room in the front pockets to store some snacks/more accessories etc. I also really love the strap system. I do a lot of long day hikes out to locations to shoot sunset or sunrise and it has always been comfortable. Very adjustable, so I can definitely see it fitting just about anyone.
I would highly recommend this bag after coming from a previous Lowepro bag that I feel lacked in features, refinement and comfort.
I have had this bag for about 4 months now and I didn't want to write a review until I tested it out in every environment possible. I have traveled with it quite extensively and I've taken it on about 15 hikes. I love the bag because of the capacity and the ability to put my laptop and ipad and other non-camera gear in it. For my Manfrotto tripod, I would rather a side pouch for it but overall it's well worth the buy.
Anvil 23 is not as comfortable as my old Expedition 7. The arm straps and the lower back padding are about half of my old one. Overall it looks like a decent backpack.
I have used Tamrac bags for more than 20 years. In fact, I still have what has served as my "main" travel bag that has circled the globe with me numerous times. Tamrac bags hold up to the rigors of travel and adventures into the back country places, off the beaten paths. I finally decided to upgrade to a larger backpack that could organize several lenses, two Canon DSLR bodies with grips, a Speedlight and several other accessories and filters. The bag itsel is sturdy, yet light enough that I can have all my gear together and pack it comfortably enough on my back that I can hike all day with it. The waist belt is very comfortable and keeps the weight on your hips and not your shoulders. When traveling through an airport I can easily throw it in a wheeled carry on bag so I don't have to carry the weight. Great bag!
Okay got the pack as I request asap. Took it on my trip to Camel-by-the-sea. Now I live in FLorida so it is a long trip, lots of waking through airports and delays. Then the walking through Point Lobos and smaller other areas. It also was used from the the trunk of the car. After I got home I knew the pack was heavy so I weighed it only to find out it was 38.5 lbs. Even with that weigh it was comfortable enough to carry for some distance. If I had to do it again I would buy this pack for sure. thank you for a great pack.
